Gorbatsjov var statsleder i Sovjetunionen fra 1985 til 1991. Han fikk Nobels fredspris i 1990 for sin viktige rolle i omveltningene i østblokken. Gjennom sin politikk med perestrojka (omstrukturering) og glasnost (åpenhet) bidro han til Sovjetunionens sammenbrudd og dermed avslutningen av Den kalde krigen.
